Ryan was born and raised in Thunder Bay and has lived in the city most of his life. He attended Lakehead University and began his accounting career in Thunder Bay in 2005. He has worked for local accounting firms Buset Sarvas Mozzon LLP and Fitzpatrick and Partners LLP.

Ryan also has extensive experience working in accounting for private entities in a management capacity.

Ryan was a member of the City of Thunder Bay's Committee of Adjustment and he is presently a member of the Thunder Bay Minor Football Association's Executive Board.
